Cheap Nano Reef Light Hood (a)

    Video Description:

  • We modify an economical freshwater aquarium hood from Wal-Mart into a durable light source for our 10-gallon Nano Lagoon reef system. Our modified hood provides 40 watts (4 watts per gal) of 50/50 daylight/actinic lighting, just right for a tropical lagoon biotope nano tank. We show how to make an acrylic lens for the hood, how to paint the underside white to increase reflectivity, and how to seal the lens in place with silicone sealant. When we start with a Wal-Mart 10-gal tank, filter and hood kit that retails for just $43, we can complete a Nano Lagoon system for less than $80 in hardware including the two 20-watt Corallife 50/50 light bulbs ($13 each). The Nano Lagoon is an economical nano reef system compared to some of the currently popular all-in-one nano systems. For example, a JBJ NanoCube Deluxe presently retails for $320 at our local Petco in Kona. The NanoCube Deluxe is a terrific product, but for the price of just one we can assemble four Nano Lagoon systems of comparable light strength. The modifications described in this video are simple enough to be accomplished by most aquarium hobbyists.
